ENGR 407: Entrepreneur Speaker Series

I went today with high hopes that I would learn some practical wisdom from a successful entrepreneur.

I came away with:

- Work hard. AND be tenacious. (Mark Zuckerberg, Michael Dell, and Larry Ellison worked hard, we were reminded).
- You cannot be average. We are in a recession. You have to be amazing. (His criteria was have a 4.0 GPA).
- God doesn't only want us to make money. He put us on this planet to add value. (so that's why!)

To be fair, I did take away some helpful things. Leading sectors will be health care, education, and information technology. 85% of millionaires are business owners.

But for the most part, I received trite platitudes and don't consider that an hour well spent. Instead of repeating the mistake next Friday, I'm going to see if I can get the notes from another person and discuss them with a few other people over lunch, weekly, in a new project I'm thinking about where bring together entrepreneurs working on different projects to exchange updates and ideas.

The speaker was George Fraser, and he's written a couple books that have "10 best..." in the title. I'm amazed at how conventional wisdom, combined with charismatic public speaking, can make you a millionaire. This guy reminds people to work hard, 150 times a year, in packed auditoriums. I'm dumbfounded.

I understand this was the first lecture. Perhaps I just have high expectations, considering how great my other classes have been. But given the price tag of each class, I should have enormous expectations, right?
